You don't need to be smarter than the rest, you just have to be more disciplined
- Warren Buffett
Introducing the Misfit Memo’s Monday Minute (too many m’s?) where, every week, I will send out a short summary of things I found interesting, in the hope you find them interesting too.
Show your work
While I was considering starting to write online, the YouTube algorithm led me to discover a valuable audiobook called "Show Your Work" by
, which made me realise 3 key things:You don’t need to be an expert, just write about what you know and are interested in and see where it leads.
Don’t go looking for an audience, pick a niche, start writing, and it will find you (hopefully). Even if nothing ever happens, the process of writing develops your understanding of the topic anyway.
The joy of being an amateur is that no one is looking at your work, and you have nothing to lose.
Dopamine and discipline
By researching more into dopamine for the first two Misfit Memo articles, I was reminded of some valuable perspectives on the role of discipline.
We must voluntarily take on challenges and suffering. Suffering makes us stronger.
Lift weights
Do something difficult
Make a challenging goal and work towards it slowly.
Develop the skill of taking self-responsibility for your actions, rather than making excuses for them
Discipline beats motivation every time - it makes you do things even when you don’t want to.
